2020 Vs. 2019 Outback Back-to-Back Comparison

The 2020 Subaru Outback Improves Upon the 2019 Model with Upgraded Powertrain Options and a Host of New Features

The Subaru lineup has long been a stanchion of off-road performance and comfortable convenience for drivers around Chattanooga. Chief among the lineup is the Subaru Outback which has steadily improved over each model year. The 2020 SUV brings plenty of new features to the already-impressive model and here at Kelly Subaru, we're happy to showcase how it's improved from the previous year. Check out a side-by-side comparison of the 2019 and 2020 model year below to see what new features you can explore!

Performance

The two engine packages available in the Subaru Outback experienced a decent-sized change for the newest model year. The base engine still offers a 2.5-liter engine, but now delivers 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque on the 2020 model as opposed to 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque on the 2019 model. The available 3.6-liter engine is now gone, replaced by a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine that delivers 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. This is a significant improvement over the previous year's output.

Fuel economy stays relatively the same for the base engine package. When you upgrade to the turbocharged engine, you'll achieve a much better performance of 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. The 2019 3.6-liter engine only managed performances of 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg while driving on the highway. Overall, the 2020 year provides better performance and fuel economy than the 2019 year model.

Design

The Outback lineup hasn't made many significant changes to the exterior and interior, but that doesn't mean you're sacrificing quality when you choose the 2020 model. While there aren't many noticeable differences on the exterior of the 2020 Subaru Outback, keen-eyed observers can still see the changes. The rear-end has redesigned taillights that provide more clarity around the rear than on the previous year. The 2020 model is also one-inch longer and one-inch wider than the 2019 model.

Climbing inside the 2020 Subaru Outback gives you the same comfort and coziness that has been prevalent throughout the lineup. You'll find that the 2020 model is a bit roomier than the 2019 model; it offers 109 cubic feet of passenger volume to the 2019's 108.1 cubic feet. The cargo area has also received a roomier upgrade offering 75.7 cubic feet of storage in the 2020 model and only 73.3 cubic feet in the 2019 model. Seating is still comfortable but, the 2020 model offers newer features like options for StarTex water-repellent upholstery as well as options for ventilated front seats. A two-position driver's seat memory feature allows you to customize the trip to meet your specific needs.

Technology

Subaru has always been at the forefront of the technology market. Drivers who enjoy the finer things in life at a more affordable price than a luxury model will enjoy a lot of what the Subaru Outback has to offer. The STARLINK® 6.5-inch display is still standard on the 2020 model but the two model years differ when it comes to available upgrades. The 2019 model only offered an eight-inch upgrade but the 2020 offers one of the largest screens yet with an available 11.6-inch touchscreen display. Other minor changes have been added including a hands-free power liftgate as opposed to just a power rear gate with the 2019 model.

Both model years offer the EyeSight® Driver Assistance package that includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and a lane-keeping assist. However, the 2020 model year continues to add more ways to keep you safe with a lane-centering feature that helps keep you in the center of your lane and not wander. They have similar technology, but it's a little bit more sophisticated in the 2020 model.

The 2020 Subaru Outback continues the trend of phenomenal performance and luxurious interiors over from the 2019 model. If you'd like to check out the latest option, swing by our dealership and explore what the 2020 model can do!
